What We Do
The little HOPE Huruma School is located in an informal settlement of 3,000 people on the edge of Runda Estates, a wealthy neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya.
As of 2019 HOPE Huruma School will consist of 5 classes from Pre-Primary 1 (4-5 yr. olds), Pre-Primary 2 (5-6 yr. olds) going up to Grades 1, 2 and 3. There are a total of 100 children with 20 students in each class. By 2022 the school will go through Grade 6 and will totally conform to the new Kenyan School System of primary schools through Grade 6.
The school exists completely on the financial support of Huruma HOPE child sponsorships, donations and special gifts. Staff salaries and two daily meals are provided by these sponsorships. Uniforms, books and classroom supplies are provided as special donations and gifts are received. Parents of the children pay about 50 cents per week to help pay for the electricity, water and cleaning. This is a considerable amount for some parents who may earn only Ksh 200 (US $2.00) per day, if they are able to find employment.
Huruma HOPE is a Christian non-profit formed in 2015 facilitate continuing support for the children of the Huruma Nursery School into the future by providing:
“Now to HIM who is able to do immeasurably MORE than all we ask or IMAGINE, according to His power that is at work WITHIN us, to Him be glory” Eph. 3:20-21
When Suzan Bellis walked into the courtyard of the Huruma Nursery School in 2005 she could not imagine what God’s plan was for this school. All she knew was that God had called us “to do something”! Now 13 years later we have seen a total transformation of the school. God’s ways far exceed our wildest imagination or expectations.
2005 – The school dirt playground and the smaller education building. Most children with tattered or no uniforms.
This does not happen with one person, 6 people, multiple teams, but with much prayer and support from so many who are now part of this ministry and makes it continue each day. God has given Huruma HOPE the vision and the growth …and we are being obedient to LISTEN, GO AND DO what He has called us to do.
2013 – The school today with cement block playground, new 2-story steel building with 3 new classrooms, office, kitchen and storeroom. All children with new uniforms.
As we move forward God has called Huruma HOPE, Intl. to add a class each year so that by 2022 we will have a complete Primary School through 6th grade. In 2019 we will add all new curriculum to meet Kenya standards along with new desks for the added classroom. We will continue to add new curriculum, desks and classroom supplies for each new class.
