The Huruma Story

Our Background

The little Mji wa Huruma Nursery School was located in an informal settlement on the edge of the upper scale Runda Estates in Nairobi, Kenya.  The school consisted of 3 classrooms with a total of 70 children (2015).  The baby class had 3 and 4 year old, the Nursery had 4 years and younger 5 yr. Olds and the Pre-Unit class had the older 5 yr. Olds and 6 yr. Olds.  The children were taught English, Bible, Christian songs along with regular studies of beginning letters, sounds, numbers and beginning reading. The children received a ½ cup of porridge each day unless a benefactor donated extra food.  It was basically a day care and the children were sent home about 1 pm to wander the pathways in the slum.  NACC started supporting the school around 2007 with funding for food and salaries.

Today in 2025, ten years later, the school has grown to 150 students in grades Pre-Primary 1 through Grade 6 (8 classes) and continues their commitment of providing salaries for our head teacher, 9 classroom teachers, 2 cooks, 2 daily meals, books, classroom supplies, teacher training, relief for families with health and emergency needs along with uniforms and shoes for students whose families can’t afford them.  HOPE also provides scholarships for students who are now in Jr. Hi and Secondary School along with 5 students in college.

As of 2015 the school existed completely on donations from North Albany Community Church before Huruma HOPE, International was formed. In 2015 HOPE started a sponsorship program that was the base for funding the school along with gift donations. The 3 teachers and 1 cook salaries along with daily meals were provided by these donations.  Uniforms, books and classroom supplies were provided as contributions were received.  The parents paid approx. 50 cents a week to pay for electricity and water.

Support a Student

Huruma HOPE, International is a non-profit formed in 2015 by 8 people who had been part of previous teams to open the doors for continued sponsorship for the school into the future by providing:

  • HOPE for every child and family to have a relationship with Jesus Christ

  • HOPE for each child to receive a quality education

  • HOPE to grow healthy with good nutrition and health care

  • HOPE for the parents to care for their families

  • HOPE that the children will continue in school through Secondary School and grow into the people that God has planned for their lives.
