Day 2 – Cultural Day at the School!
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!" – Psalm 118:24
Because so many members of our team were visiting Kenya for the first time, there was an unmistakable sense of excitement and wonder throughout the day. As we traveled to the school, every turn revealed something new to see, hear, and experience.
Once we arrived, we walked the road into the school together. Click Here
As we entered, we were warmly welcomed by student representatives from each grade level. Every student greeted us with a smile, shook our hands, and made us feel incredibly loved and appreciated.
Following the welcome, we were invited to Anne's office, where we dressed in traditional Maasai shukas before heading to the large classroom for a special cultural presentation. It was such a meaningful experience to learn more about Kenyan traditions and celebrate the rich culture of the community. Watch Here
After the presentations, we learned about the staple foods that make up much of the Kenyan diet, including cassava, arrowroot, sweet potatoes, wheat, and sorghum.
We then split up and returned to the classrooms, where we helped teachers with lessons and spent time playing games with the students. The laughter echoing through the classrooms was contagious. Seeing the joy on the children's faces reminded us just how much God loves them. We are so thankful for the teachers who faithfully invest in these students every day. Many members of our team commented on how well the teachers kept the students engaged, encouraged, and eager to learn. We continue to pray that God richly blesses the staff and students at Huruma HOPE School.
Lunch was another opportunity for fellowship. Some of us enjoyed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, while others shared the school's meal of pinto beans and cabbage.
Before the school day ended, we took the younger students on a walk through Huruma Village. We stopped at the football (soccer) field, where everyone joined in games, laughter, and plenty of fun. It truly was one of the highlights of the day!
Around 3:00 p.m., our friend Peter Wakori picked us up from the school with the help of his drivers, Moses and Eric, twin brothers who expertly navigated the busy roads of Nairobi. Let's just say... some of us preferred to keep our eyes closed during the drive! Traffic here can feel a bit chaotic, but they handled it with confidence and skill.
Before returning to Heart Lodge, we stopped at Village Market to purchase a SIM card for our Kenya phone and pick up a few supplies we thought the school could use. We also grabbed a few snacks for ourselves before heading back for the evening.
God continues to bless this trip in so many ways. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for our team. We are grateful for your support and look forward to sharing more of what God is doing at Huruma HOPE School.
